How to Play Traditional
Music on the Tin Whistle

with whistle wizard

Gerry Strong

In our ongoing series of day-long workshops promoting the traditional performing arts of Newfoundland and Labrador, we're ecstatic to have Gerry Strong facilitating this workshop!

photo by Rick West Gerry has been involved with countless folk bands, and has played as a session musician on innumerable recordings. As a long time member of the seminal traditional band Tickle Harbour, Gerry gained a reputation as a world class tin whistle/flute player (among other things!!).

The tin whistle...we know it's cheap, but is it easy?? Gerry will talk a little about the technicalities involved in playing the ultimate portable instrument. Clear tone, breathing, and ornamentation are topics that will be touched upon, as well as repertoire, and information on the types of whistles available.

...and yes, you will learn to play a tune!

Please bring whistles in the key of D to the workshop. For more information on Gerry Strong, drop into his web site: http://home.cablerocket.com/~gstrong/

The St. John's Folk Arts Council is interested in presenting activities that involve participation between the generations. There is no age limit for this workshop, but all participants all participants must own a whistle, and should be able to play at least one tune.
