"TUNE REPERTOIRE WORKSHOP "
with Christina Smith, Stan Pickett, Dave Penny, Rob Brown & Michelle Brophy

Do you play fiddle? Accordion? Tin whistle? Would you like to learn something more than the comfortable old standards I'se Da B'ye and Mussels in the Corner?

Come to the St. John's Folk Arts Council Repertoire Building Workshop! Traditional musicians Christina Smith (fiddle), Stan Pickett (accordion), Dave Penny (accordion/fiddle) and Rob Brown (uillean pipes/whistle) will teach you some Newfoundland tunes that you won't find in books, or on many recordings!

This workshop will take place over a four week period. Each class will be 90 minutes long, and will cover two fabulous tunes, for a total of eight new tunes in all. Each participant will also receive an instructional CD of the tunes covered, as well as sheet music. The classes will be hosted by a different facilitator each week.

When you register, please let the SJFAC know what instrument you will be bringing, and what key the instrument is in, if applicable (eg. C/G Accordion)

This workshop is not for beginners, but for people who have at least a basic knowledge of their instrument. .

Participants of this workshop will also receive a reduced rate for our MUSIC OF BAY DE VERDE workshop on Sat. May 15th, hosted by legendary accordion player Ray Walsh, and his talented son Greg Walsh. (details of this workshop will be posted soon.)

Christina Smith: Christina is a traditional musician and teacher who has travelled the province far and wide, collecting and learning Newfoundland instrumental tunes. Christina has amassed her repertoire from well known musicians such as Frank Maher, Emile Benoit, Rufus Guinchard, and John Joe Pigdeon. She teaches a course in Newfoundland fiddling at Memorial University School of Music, and continues to develop the instrumental tradition of the province by composing her own tunes. She also performs, tours and records as one half of the award winning duo, Christina Smith and Jean Hewson.

STAN PICKETT : Stan Pickett is an accordion player and teacher who is interested in collecting and performing Newfoundland traditional dance tunes. Stan has also added to the repertoire by composing some great original tunes as well! Originally from Fair Island Bonavista Bay, he currently lives in St. John's, where he performs at various functions, both as a solo artist, and as a member of the Auntie Crae Band.

DAVE PENNY: Dave is a protege of Newfoundland accordion master Frank Maher. To quote Dave: "Frank taught me everything I know!" To quote Frank: "Yes, but I didn't teach you everything that *I* know!!" Dave's terrific accordion playing and great sense of humour endears him to his students, and to the audiences who have the pleasure of seeing him perform. Dave often performs at Folk Night, Wednesdays at the Ship Pub, and has played at several different music festivals around the island.

ROB BROWN / MICHELLE BROPHY: Rob and Michelle have played at sessions around St. John's for many years as well as many festivals. One of the few musicians on the island brave enough to tackle the uillean pipes, Rob is also a dab hand at the guitar and the tin whistle while Michelle is very talented flautist and whistle player as well. A mild mannered engineer by day and a wild and crazy folk musician at night, Rob has facilitated workshops such as the St. John's Folk Arts Council "Young Folk at the Hall" and both he and Michelle are the forces behind the popular instrumental workshops held annually at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival.
