Storytelling, Songs, Music Sessions and Folk Nights

Storytelling

Storytelling has a rich tradition in the Province and we helped establish a storytelling festival and hosted several workshops. Today the St. John's Storytelling Festival is one of our community partners. Visit the Crow's Nest on the second Thursday of each month to hear or tell a good yarn at their St. John's Storytelling Circle and support their other events in and outside St. John's throughout the year. Visit the storytelling sessions at the annual NL Folk Festival in the Oral Traditions tent and in the Homemade Jam Tent.

Ballad Night

An acapella song circle is held the last Thursday of each month at the Crow's Nest. 7:30 p.m. $3 admission.

Folk/Open Mike Nights

     St. John's:
        • Folk Night at the Ship Inn, Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m.

        • Country Music Cafe, St. Augustine's Church Hall (off Westerland
          Road, adjacent to the Aquarena), first Saturday of the month
          at 8:00 p.m. start. (Jan-June). Old-time country, bluegrass, trad
          and Newfoundland country music in an acoustic setting. Bring
          along an acoustic instrument and sing at the open mike show or
          join others at the jam session that follows. $5 admission (adults,

     Conception Bay South:
        • Open mike, All Saints Parish Hall, CBS, 2nd Saturday of each
           month (country, bluegrass, Newfoundland, Irish and gospel
           music). Doors open at 7:15, show starts at 8 pm. $5 admission.

     Stephenville:
        • Folk Night hosted by The Bay St. George Folk Arts Council,
           Holiday Inn, last Saturday of each month.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) or what some call “Living Heritage” encompasses many traditions, practices and customs. These include the stories we tell, the family events we celebrate, our community gatherings, the languages we speak, the songs we sing, knowledge of our natural spaces, our healing traditions, the foods we eat, our holidays, beliefs and cultural practices. In this edition of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Update from Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial University's Department of Folklore will be hosting the the launch of the Dr. Peter Narvaez book Sonny's Dream: Essays on Newfoundland Folklore and Popular Culture; ICH Development Officer Dale Jarvis explores the revitalization of the Christmas Hobby Horse tradition in Newfoundland and Labrador; we meet the new public folklore intern, Nicole Penney; and notes on our ongoing basket and basket makers project. Music, Media and Place
**************************************************************
MMaP, the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place, distributes folk/music-related books. Its Back on Track CD Series aims to make rare and currently inaccessible Newfoundland music available to a broader public. Distinguished scholars from the academic community are featured in an annual lecture series open to the general public regarding historical and contemporary musical practices. (MMaP website)

DanceNL

Instructional Videos and CDs

Inshore Fiddling is an audio fiddle method - it consists of two CDs, and an accompanying book. The Cds are structured in a step-by-step fashion, using familiar material to introduce new techniques. All the teacher needs to have is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn along with the students.
