FILK NIGHT AT THE SHIP
In the 1950's an American by the name of Lee Jacobs wrote an article for the Spectator Amateur Press Society on the influence of science fiction and fantsy on folk music. As fate and circumstance would have it, the article was published with a typo in the title (The Influence of Science Fiction on Modern American Filk Music), and a new genre was born. The name "filk" was appropriated by sci-fi fans to describe the original songs and parodies that they would create and share at informal musical gatherings at science fiction conventions.
Folk Night presents Filk Night...an evening of sci-fi and fantasy music. Co-presented by the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Council and Sci-Fi on the Rock; Newfoundland's Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention (Apri 19-20 at the Holiday Inn) it promises to be truly out of this world. Warning: Aliens may be in attendance. Practice your Vulcan nerve pinch, dust off your phaser, come on down to the Ship and don't forget that time honoured Klingon phrase, Hiq DasammeH tach yI'el (To find ale, one must go into a bar). Featuring COLLEEN POWER, THE ART STOYLES BAND, JEAN HEWSON and many other extra-terrestrials.
