Old World / New World
As part of marking the 400th anniversary of British settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador we thought it would be interesting (and fun) to check out a few songs from the Old World that may seem familiar to ears in the New world, as well as showcase some songs of our own that can trace their beginnings to the British tradition. To help us out we’ve got experts from both sides of the pond.

English Stories
with Melanie Ray
Listening to stories reaches back to Melanie Ray’s childhood and her father’s renditions of Rapunzel. She started telling them to amuse a wakeful little sister. When Melanie grew up, she did the same for her daughter. The daughter was 12 before her mum realized that she loved to tell to grownups too. She bundled up that love with skills learned in the theatre, she set out as a professional storyteller. We’re proud to welcome this master of the craft to the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. Stories and Tunes from Pigeon Inlet
With: Kelly Russell
The Chronicles of Uncle Mose is a series of tales created by Ted Russell. Neither the stories nor Mr. Russell need any introduction to the vast majority of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians Taking place in the fictional community of Pigeon Inlet the stories have left a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of several generations as a comical, often poignant snap shot of life in outport Newfoundland.
Ted`s son Kelly is one of Newfoundland's most well known traditional musicians. He is an admired performer who has brought Newfoundland music all across the world and has helped preserve some of our finest music as well as the work of some of our greatest performers. We are very happy to have Kelly bringing his father`s stories to life as only he can. (website).
