Paul Pike
Photo courtesy of Paul PikeOne of this year's Common Ground performers, Paul Pike is from the Mi'kmaq Nation and grew up in a musical family of Mi'kmaq, Irish and French ancestry. He started playing drums at age 4 and went on to learn guitar, keyboards, bass and Native American Flute. Always a singer, he played in rock bands most of his life but always had an appreciation of other musical styles. Powwow music is one of his favorites, and he enjoys traditional dancing. Currently Paul is a musician and the main composer/vocalist for the award-winning band MEDICINE DREAM. His compositions combine elements of rock with the spirit of powwow into masterpieces - heartfelt, simple and as real as possible.   (website)

David Francey and Terry Tufts
Photo courtesy of David FranceyDavid Francey is a singer and consumate storyteller who immediately establishes a personal rapport with his audience. His social conscience, wry humour and astute observations, combined with his poetic and openhearted songs of and for the common man, have made him a national treasure and the recipient of numerous awards including two Junos. David is accompanied by Terry Tufts, a superb award-winning singer/songwriter in his own right, avid environmentalist, and a virtuoso finger-style guitarist who is constantly sought as an instrumentalist by leading folk performers. See Common Ground for more details.     (David's website)    (Terry's website)

The Fousty Toutons
photo courtesy of the Fousty ToutonsTHE FOUSTY TOUTONS are the world's original and perhaps only "Folkabilly" group. Combining the traditions of folk and billy music the Foustys have collectively played thousands of shows for hundreds of people worldwide. Legend has it that years ago The Foustys embarked on a worldwide quest for the perfect Touton and travelled as far away as the Goulds and other exotic locales. In doing so they furthered their knowledge of indigenous Touton cultures and the uniqe musical styles which they have combined and refined into Folkabilly music. Their music can be heard on two Avondale Music compilations. In the Palm of Your Hand features the spiritual Go Tell it on the Touton and the Home Brew 7 features My Blueberry Eyed Jane. They are: Rik Barron, Gary Taylor, David Guy, and Ed Southerby ( not pictured for reasons of national security). Folkabilly - the music of yesterday played today like there's no tomorrow.    (Rik's website)

Sing Out The Festival
Jim Payne, photo by Rick WestThis year, we're closing the festival with an old fashioned sing-a-long featuring traditional and contemporary songs that have worked their way into the hearts of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Featuring performances by Jenny Gear and Sandy Morris; Jim Payne; THE FLUMMIES with Shirley Montague and Donna Roberts; Zak Chaulk and Alex Dinn; Greg Walsh and Fred Jorgensen; Fergus O'Byrne and Dermot O'Reilly; and David Francey. The lyrics will be printed in our festival program booklet, and yes, we promise that we will use a large font so that those of us who are middle aged will be able to pick out the lyrics in the dark!
