President's Report - October 2000
The Governing Board met twice during the summer. The following actions were approved:
1. Several thousand brochures promoting the annual festival and the weekly folkclub were produced. Placemats promoting the festival were also made available to downtown restaurants. The Board also approved a decision to produce placemats for use at the Ship Inn to promote the folk club.
2. The SJFAC Special Events Commitee (Rob Brown, Michelle Brophy, Tonya Kearley, Bridget Noonan and Rick West) promoted the Newfoundland Folk Festival and SJFAC at the Land & Seafood Festival on Water Street on July 14-16, 2000. Displays and activities included wood turning, stained glass making, ornamental candles, traditional music sessions, traditional dances and a poster board and promotion of the August Folk Festival.
3. Memberships will be $20.00 for the entire calendar year and $12 from August to December. There will be a new membership/membership renewal drive in January and a second drive at next year's festival to attract new members.
4. Grant applications for 2001 have been made to the City of St. John's, Provincial Government (Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council) and Heritage Canada. An additional grant application to the Canada Council will be submitted in January.
5. Next year will mark the 25th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. The grant (if successful) from Heritage Canada would help fund the SJFAC's plans to bring back performers from previous years, and attract special headliners for the festival. SJFAC members are welcome to make suggestions.
6. Folk Club - Rob Brown has taken over as sound technician for the Folk Club and is doing a great job. We are using the Ship Inn's house system and Eastern Audio provides the microphones, stands, DI boxes and patch cords. Many thanks also to Ron Hynes for letting us use his monitors.
7. A "Madhatter Evening" will take place on Wednesday, December 20, 2000. The evening will consist of several acts of musicians who have never played together before. The names of the performers will be drawn from a hat in groups of two or three a few weeks prior to the event. Each group will play three or four numbers during the night and the proceeds of the evening will benefit the SJFAC. See this issue of the Broadside for more information.
