Special Events

by Rob Brown

It has been recognized by members of the board that the St. John's Folk Arts Council could have a greater presence in the Newfoundland and Labrador folk arts community. In an effort to emphasize the mandate of our organization, the board has decided to support the setup of a Special Events Committee. The idea of such a group within the SJFAC is to organize events outside of the annual folk festival and the weekly folk night throughout the year.

Some initial ideas for events include quarterly concerts, acoustic recitals, traditional Newfoundland set dancing, lectures on aspects of provincial history, vocal and instrumental workshops, and storytelling.

These are just a few of the ideas that have surfaced. At the first meeting we expect to brainstorm on more ideas and find ways to make them work.

Making this committee successful will require considerable dedication and effort on the part of its members, but the benefits would certainly be rewarding and worthwhile in promoting the unique culture and folk arts of this province.

If you want more information or would like to get involved with this committee please contact either Rob Brown or Bridget Noonan (details given below). The only stipulation is that you must be a general member of the SJFAC.
