Cops for Cancer CD, On The Beat

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in Newfoundland and Labrador has been participating in the COPS FOR CANCER campaign since 1997. In 1999, RNC members raised $84,000, more than double the funds raised the previous year. Last year over 100 RNC members and civilians in St John's, Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South, Corner Brook and Labrador West had their heads shaved to raise pledges in support of COPS FOR CANCER. In addition, members of the RNC raised funds through a cross-island bike tour (Tour De Rock), held car washes, community BBQ's and dunk tanks and sold T-shirts and hats.

Tour de Rock was a new event for the 1999 campaign. Eight RNC members travelled by bicycle from Port aux Basques to St John's with scheduled stops at Corner Brook, Deer Lake, Springdale, Grand Falls, Bishop's Falls, Gander, Clarenville and Whitbourne. Funds were raised in these communities through member-sponsored car washes and dunk tanks and the selling of T-shirts and hats. Tour de Rock was so successful in 1999 that the RNC Association has sponsored it as an annual event.

For the 2000 campaign, the RNC has added yet another fundraiser -- a COPS FOR CANCER CD called On The Beat. In 1999, four members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary formed a band called "Síochána" (pronounced shee - kahw-na ). They got together because of a common love for music, and performed for charities and senior citizens homes. The COPS FOR CANCER CD, On The Beat is the brainchild of Darrin Feehan of Síochána, who launched the venture in the fall of 1999. He approached artists to contribute to the making of the CD and was, and is still is, overwhelmed by the response. The project took on a "life of its own." Was it the "cause" or the passion of the people who live here on this wind blown rock? A combination of both. The support and generosity freely given to this project by the artists will forever be remembered and cherished. The Police, the Community, Artists, the Cancer Society and KIXX Children's Trust Fund are all winners.
