Benefit Helps Raise Money for Oxfam's work with Tsunami Victims
by Marnie Parsons

On Saturday, January 15th, the SJFAC, in cooperation with the Spirit of Newfoundland, hosted a fundraiser for Oxfam-Canada’s work with victims of the December 26th tsunami. The Spirit of Newfoundland kindly donated use of the Majestic Theatre for the benefit. A wonderfully eclectic line-up of musicians and writers performed: Thanks to the Atlantic String Quartet, Alison Pick, Agnes Walsh, Dzolali Drum and Dance Ensemble, Fergus O’Byrne, Michael Crummey and the Mahers Bahers for fabulous performances in a warm and lovely setting. Rik Barron was, as ever, an engaging and congenial host. Numerous writers, musicians, artists and small businesses donated items for raffles and door prizes, and many kind volunteers offered their time before and during the benefit. Michael Crummey donated a box of 25 copies of the new British paperback version of his novel River Thieves to be sold at $10 each (a remarkable deal!); all of them were snapped up by eager readers. More than $1700 was raised that evening. Local Oxfam programme officers Bill Hynd and Linda Ross were on hand to talk with people and offer thanks for donations; they continue to be grateful for the generosity of Newfoundlanders in their response to the disaster in Southeast Asia.

The Folk Night on February 9th, just before Valentine’s Day, will also be dedicated as a fundraiser for Oxfam. Folk Night Co-ordinator Caroline Clarke has put together a wonderful roster of performers; Blair Harvey, Sally Goddard, Jean Hewson, Sara & Kamilla, Dave Penny, and Don Walsh and Nadine Hollett will all sing, in honour of the season, their favourite bawdy songs. “Cupid with a Twist!” – it looks to be a great evening. Thanks to Caroline for all her hard work, and to the folks who come out to support Oxfam.
