On the Beach in Spanish Room - Wins Award

”What an unassuming but brilliant little gem this recording is. Set in Newfoundland, all six stories stand proudly on their own, but together they have the sweep of a novel. The reason is Janis Spence’s marvelous characters, “who wore their lives as casually as big sweaters.” She gives them added dimension by bringing them back at various times in their lives. In “Life With the Barons,” for example, listeners meet Nina, the adopted daughter of a well-off couple. Two stories later, the truth about her parentage is revealed in “Father Joe.”

An experienced actor and stage director, Spence gives a masterful performance of all the roles she’s created—and it doesn’t hurt that she’s got that incomparable Newfoundland accent. D.B. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award.”

The Youth Folk Arts Education Initiative

The St. John’s Folk Arts Council established the Youth Folk Arts Education Fund in 2003 in order to be able to offer a special subsidy to encourage and support the development of young folk artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. As funds permit, subsidies may be awarded in aid of education in folk music, song, dance and other recognized folk arts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Applicants must be 17 years of age or younger at the time they will be participating in the subsidized education. The activity pursued must be of a unique or occasional nature (i.e. not a course of regular arts instruction) and will often involve travel to a location away from the applicant’s home community.

Subsidies are awarded by the Youth Folk Arts Education Committee of the St. John’s Folk Arts Council. The Committee ranks all submissions based on the quality of the training opportunity, its value to the applicant, and the extent of need demonstrated by the applicant. Awards will very rarely cover the full costs of the education sought and the Committee exercises its discretion in determining subsidy amounts.

There is an annual deadline for summer camp applications but, otherwise, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis subject to available funds.

For further information regarding the subsidy program or the application process, please contact the St. John’s Folk Arts Council. The application materials can also be downloaded here.
