Here's Looking at You

Can You Help?

Memorial Student, Kristin Harris, is working on her PhD dissertation in Folklore. Her focus is traditional/folk dance in the St. John's region. She contacted the SJFAC office to put out a call to the folk arts community for contacts/information related to her research. She would appreciate any information or assistance provided by the arts community in St. John's. You can contact her through the Department of Folklore at Memorial University. On a personal note, Kristin mentions that she is a budding step dancer and would like the opportunity to attend dance workshops and performances.

Vince Collins

The accordion music he picked up first from his father and mother in the parlour, and then the tunes carried home from parties in communities around St. Anne's, Placentia Bay are the jigs, reels, triples and waltzes of Vince Collins. This past year, Vince Collins has taken his accordion talent from the kitchen and cabin to an occasional folk night at the Ship Inn, to the Folk Festival stage and to the recording studio. In the coming months his first CD recording will be released, co-produced by Bob Hallett of Great Big Sea and by his son, Glen Collins. Glen accompanies his father on guitar, keeping alive the musical tradition in the family.

Watch for a CD release early in the new year! In addition, Vince and Glen will host a Folk Night at the Ship Inn in February.

Official CD release by Danette Eddy In July 2002.

Get Well Soon, Frank!

TO FRANK MAHER: We await your imminent return and look forward to seeing your smilin' face again. It will be nice to hear some tunes from the deep, dark recesses.

Mrs. Kearney's Quilt

Mrs. Margaret Kearney made a beautiful quilt in Louise's memory and donated it to the St. John's Folk Arts Council for use in fund-raising. The quilt was won in a raffle by Kim Murphy. Congratulations, Kim!
